Description

A blend of sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium lactate and calcium, Lactated Ringers is a sterile solution used to replace fluids and electrolytes in patients with unbalanced blood fluid. Ringer’s solutions are the IV fluids of choice for almost every situation.

Lactated Ringer’s Solution is preferred over normal saline solution because the by-products of lactate metabolism in the liver counteracts acidosis, which is a chemical imbalance that occurs with acute fluid loss or kidney failure.

Side Effects

RARE

During pregnancy, expecting mothers may become more sensitive to the sodium lactate in Lactated Ringers. For this reason, pregnant clients receiving IV Drips will be given 0.9% Normal Saline Solution instead of LR.
